Early applications in law, healthcare, and finance are both tantalizing and intimidating, useful, but prone to hallucinations or subtle errors that can cascade dangerously without diligent guardrails. Second, competition is necessary and healthy, yet it should not preclude robust safeguards or transparency for the sake of corporate one-upmanship. The march toward “AI that genuinely understands and reflects our intent” is not inevitable or straightforward; it is a design problem, but also a governance and cultural problem.
Finally, the OpenAI-Anthropic rivalry has forced the broader tech sector to confront some uncomfortable questions. Whose values get encoded by default into these world-shaping systems? Is “safe” AI a technical achievement, a moral imperative, or a moving target subject to the tides of profit and public opinion?
